You start your day reviewing the latest issues and Slack conversations/channels related to all things geospatial data. You utilize what you’ve learned in your GIS studies to review layer data, data sources, and how they can be best organized, compiled and automated for best in class coverage. You’ll spend a fair amount of time research global public domain data that relates to all things Outside. Converting spatial data file formats, projections and coordinate systems using the latest open source conversion tools will be second nature.

Timeframe

Internships that provide class credit often span 1 typical school semester. For plans that are more flexible, less hours per week are required. In order to plan, at least 15-hours a week should be reserved for the internship. To account for learning and ramp-up time, a minimum of 3-months, with a maximum time of 6-months dedication is required. The following timeframes should be observed:

  • 3-4 months: 20-25 hours/week
  • 4-6 months: 15-20 hours/week

What you will do:

  • Research GIS data sources around the world related to outside activities
  • Organize GIS data and normalize data sets, attributes
  • Write batch scripts that utilize open source spatial tools
  • Help design map overlays that enable users to plan the best outdoor experiences

This describes you:

  • You are an avid outdoor enthusiast with a passion and affinity for maps and geospatial data
  • You have recently completed or are near completion of degree, certificate, or certification in GIS
  • You have experience or coursework related to using geographic data from multiple sources, projections and various coordinate systems.
  • You have experience or an introduction to geographic programming (preferably Python)
  • You’re comfortable working on a Linux command line
  • You emphasize graphic design when creating a functional and beautiful map.
  • You love all things geospatial and maps in general
  • You’re a collaborative team player who celebrates the success of your team

Nice to have:

  • Experience or coursework in SQL, GDAL-Python, QGIS, and PostGIS Spatial Types
  • Experience with AWS, GitHub and other open source GIS tools
  • Graphic design experience with industry tools (Adobe, etc.)

Fully remote jobs that can be performed in Boulder, Colorado: Employees can expect to be paid an hourly rate of $21.63.
