Team’s Mission / Work Responsibilities

Global Operations Team mission:

Mercari Group brings together employees from diverse backgrounds. While native languages vary greatly, employees work in either English or Japanese. The Global Operations Team’s mission is not only to facilitate communication between teams, but to remove cultural barriers, ensure the most accurate message is portrayed, and create mutual understanding between members.

Specific work responsibilities include the following (Interpretation 80%, Translation 20%):

  • Interpreting at internal and external meetings/events (simultaneous 90%, consecutive 10%)
    - Internal: Company all-hands (company-wide meeting), product development meetings, trainings, 1-on-1s, etc.
    - External: Meetings with business partners, hiring/engineering-related events, etc.

    * JP → EN: 70%, EN → JP: 30%

    * Most interpretation services are provided via Google Meet.

  • Designing, running, and facilitating events and projects to promote internal communication at Mercari

In addition to the above, you will also be asked to perform the following translation tasks:

  • Translation of internal documents to aid Mercari's product development and global expansion (JA↔EN)
  • Translation of external documents including social media posts and owned media (JA↔EN)

Unique and Bold Challenges

The Global Operations Team helps to create an inclusive corporate culture at Mercari through its translation and interpreting work, enabling diverse talent to come together and innovate. We also handle a variety of other areas including product localization, creation of a global culture at Mercari, and event management.

Required Qualifications

  • Shared understanding and belief in the mission and values of our company and of Mercari Group as a whole
  • Japanese: Proficient Level (CEFR - C1)
  • English: Proficient Level (CEFR - C1)
  • At least three years of experience interpreting/translating or equivalent training from an interpretation school
  • Ability and stamina to interpret internal meetings for 1 hour by yourself
  • Understanding of or interest in learning about the tech industry
  • Strong communication and writing skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in people management or interest in people management as a career path
  • Experience in operating Remote Simultaneous Interpretation (RSI)
  • Experience interpreting/translating in a tech or finance-related industry
  • Experience in hiring and onboarding new employees of all backgrounds
  • Experience in helping to improve the language environment of your organization

Key Points for Technical Assignments

  • Translation
    • Those that pass the CV screening will be sent a translation test to complete before the first interview.
  • Interpretation
    • An interpretation skill check will be conducted in the first interview.

Employment Status


  • Probationary period: First 3 months after joining the company. (During this period your contract conditions will be the same as that of a permanent employee.)

  • 社内・社外ミーティングやイベントでの幅広い通訳(同時9割、逐次1割)

    - 社内:All-hands(全社会議)、プロダクト開発会議、研修、1on1など

    - 社外:ビジネスパートナー企業との会議、採用やエンジニアリング系イベントなど

  • 多様なメンバー間のコミュニケーションを促進する社内イベントやプロジェクトの設計、運営、ファシリテーション


  • 開発の仕様書、メルカリプロダクト開発及び海外展開に伴うドキュメントの翻訳(EN↔JA)
  • SNS投稿やオウンドメディアの記事を含む社外向けドキュメント類の翻訳(EN↔JA)
