Scientist - Natural Resources/Railroad

We are seeking to hire an entry-level Scientist to join our robust Natural Resources/Railroad team. This position will assist project managers with natural resource-based projects involving wetlands, threatened & endangered species, and water resource permitting issues.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate the ability to be highly organized, multi-task, and navigate various complex projects. This role requires a proactive and detail-oriented individual with strong analytical skills, effective communication abilities, a proactive approach to problem-solving, and a commitment to taking initiative. Primary duties are located within an office or remote office environment with occasional fieldwork.

In line with our commitment to work/life balance, this role offers complete remote flexibility. As a valued member of the Benesch team, you can choose to work from any of our offices that host a Railroad team, including locations such as Milwaukee, WI; Chicago, IL; Naperville, IL; Charlotte, NC; Cincinnati, OH; Jacksonville, FL; Omaha, NE; and Raleigh, NC.

Benesch’s Railroad Division is made up of highly skilled rail professionals, many of whom are former employees of operating railroads. This firsthand experience working on designing and maintaining active rail systems uniquely equips our team to develop innovative solutions to a wide variety of rail projects.

The Impact You Will Have

  • Conduct fieldwork tasks such as wetland delineations, natural resources inventories, and environmental surveys.
  • Provide technical support for permit compliance and regulatory requirements.
  • Be prepared for frequent travel, including overnight stays both within and outside the state.
  • Assist project managers with various tasks to ensure project success.
  • Manage project schedules and budgets to ensure timely completion of deliverables.
  • Contribute to project proposals and collaborate with team members.
  • Stay updated on federal and regional regulations.
  • Build relationships with relevant agencies and represent Benesch as a subject matter expert.
  • Promote a culture of safety awareness and professionalism in the workplace.

What We Are Looking For

  • Bachelor’s degree in Biology or Environmental Sciences with 1-4 years of relevant work experience.
  • Prior experience in wetland delineation, botanical surveys, and surveys related to threatened and endangered species.
  • Familiarity with native vegetation identification and state and federal environmental permitting.
  • Previous experience in renewable energy projects is a plus.
  • Knowledge of state and federal permitting processes is desired.
  • Proficiency in technical writing and experience in quality assurance/quality control of data and reporting are essential.
