We are excited to hire a Transit Strategy Consultant to join our small but mighty Research and Consulting team! Our team helps transit agencies around the world to figure out their future. We guide them in designing, planning and optimizing demand-response transportation, to make transit more efficient, accessible, and sustainable. You will play a critical role in building up Spare’s consulting capacity and helping us become a trusted thought leader in the transit space.Our Spare HQ is in Vancouver - BC, but this position is open to remote work options across Canada and the US. If you like coming into an office, you can work from our HQ as desired, and we also provide a co-working stipend for those who wish to work in an office outside Vancouver.
To ensure we're meeting market rates for candidates in the United States, the range for U.S. candidates falls between $126,000–$141,000 USD (based on location & experience level).
As a Transit Strategy Consultant, you will...
- Lead consulting projects for transit agencies around the world, including feasibility studies, simulation studies, and cost-benefit analyses. You’ll be delivering work for some of the largest agencies and operators in North America!
- Collaborate with Spare’s Growth team to deliver paid-for consultancy services to existing customers that helps us to expand their services.
- Support new business opportunities by responding to large RFPs and conducting pro-bono strategic consultancy for key accounts.
- Contribute to maintaining a healthy P&L for the Research and Consulting team – yes, we have our own revenue targets!
About this role✨
In this role, you will...- Conduct in-depth data analysis, using tools such as Excel, Python, R and GIS, as well as our in-house simulation software, to model the performance of demand-response transit systems.
- Engage with key stakeholders (from riders and drivers, to planners and dispatchers, to the C-suite of transit agencies) and build strong relationships that ensure the long-term success of our consultancy projects.
- Drive research initiatives (e.g. Spare’s annual impact report, collaborations with academic labs, etc.) to produce trusted research that positions Spare as an industry expert.
- Present at conferences, contribute to Spare’s blog, and support webinars to enhance Spare’s profile in the industry.
- Play a significant role in shaping the long-term evolution of the Research & Consulting team, in close collaboration with the team’s Director.
About you ✨
- You have 3+ years of experience in consulting – ideally within transit, urban planning or environmental science, but other experiences are just as valuable.
- Have proven ability to manage client-facing projects, delivering strategic recommendations based on data-driven analysis. It’s a plus if you’ve managed large projects with government entities.
- Strong analytical skills and experience with tools such as Excel, Python, or data visualization platforms to draw valuable insights. Crucially, you can identify what ‘valuable’ means to different stakeholders.
- Experience managing budgets and possibly even your team’s P&L.
- Have excellent communication and presentation skills, comfortable speaking to both technical and non-technical audiences. We mean it – this job entails a lot of writing and presenting!
- Have a solution-seeking attitude, and a critical eye for detail.
