Iowa's economy is built on some of the most productive agricultural land on earth. John Deere, though headquartered in nearby Moline, Illinois, has deep Iowa roots and operates major manufacturing and parts distribution facilities throughout the state. Deere's presence — alongside CNH Industrial, AGCO, and a web of smaller agricultural equipment manufacturers — makes Iowa a center of the global farm machinery industry. The University of Iowa in Iowa City and Iowa State University in Ames are research-intensive public universities that generate significant intellectual property and produce engineers, scientists, and business graduates who power Iowa's knowledge economy.
