Remote Work in Louisiana

Louisiana's economic story is one of extraordinary natural wealth, recurring boom-and-bust cycles, and a cultural richness unmatched by any other state. The Mississippi River made Louisiana a commercial crossroads from the earliest days of European settlement — New Orleans, founded by the French in 1718, grew into one of the most important port cities in North America, handling the trade of an entire continent's river system. Cotton and sugar, grown on vast plantations by enslaved people, generated enormous wealth concentrated in the hands of a planter class, while the port economy sustained merchants, shippers, and skilled tradespeople of every background.

Oil changed Louisiana again in the twentieth century. The discovery of oil in Jennings in 1901 — the same year as the famous Spindletop well in Texas — set off an energy boom that reshaped the state's Gulf Coast economy. Offshore drilling, which began in earnest in the 1940s and 1950s in the shallow waters of the Gulf of Mexico, turned Louisiana into the center of the U.S. offshore energy industry. Shell, ExxonMobil, Chevron, BP, and hundreds of service companies — including Halliburton and Schlumberger (now SLB) — built major operations in Louisiana. The petrochemical corridor along the Mississippi River between Baton Rouge and New Orleans, sometimes called "Cancer Alley," became one of the most concentrated chemical manufacturing zones in the world.

The energy industry remains central to Louisiana's economy, but the state has diversified, particularly following the devastation of Hurricanes Katrina (2005) and Rita (2005), which prompted significant economic restructuring. New Orleans rebuilt with a stronger technology and entrepreneurship component. The city's film industry boomed under generous tax credits, earning it the nickname "Hollywood South." Gameloft, IEC Electronics, and a growing cluster of tech startups have made New Orleans a genuine, if modest, tech hub. Tulane and Louisiana State University anchor research and talent development.

Baton Rouge is the state capital and home to significant petrochemical, government, and medical employment, including the large Our Lady of the Lake and Baton Rouge General hospital systems. Shreveport in northwestern Louisiana has a gaming industry (Horseshoe, Bossier City casinos) and Barksdale Air Force Base as its primary economic drivers.

Remote work holds particular promise in Louisiana's urban areas, where infrastructure is strong and cost of living remains low compared to major metros. New Orleans in particular has become a destination for remote workers drawn by the city's unparalleled culture, food scene, and relatively affordable housing — though climate resilience remains a concern that any potential relocator must weigh carefully.
