Cincinnati developed around the meatpacking, soap, and consumer goods industries of the nineteenth century. Procter & Gamble, founded in Cincinnati in 1837 as a soap and candle company, grew into one of the largest consumer goods companies in the world, with brands including Tide, Pampers, Gillette, and Crest. Kroger, founded in Cincinnati in 1883, is today one of the largest grocery retailers in the country. Columbus, as the state capital and home to The Ohio State University — one of the largest universities by enrollment in the country — developed a more government- and education-centric economy that has proven more resilient to industrial swings.
