Wisconsin's economy has always been shaped by its land — the rich dairy soils of the south and west, the iron and timber country of the north, and the Great Lakes shoreline that linked it to continental trade. The state's economic identity is so thoroughly intertwined with dairy farming that it bears the formal title "America's Dairyland" on every license plate, and no state challenges that claim: Wisconsin produces more cheese than any other state and is the leading dairy state by most measures.

German and Scandinavian immigrants who settled Wisconsin in the mid-nineteenth century brought dairy farming traditions from their homelands and found the state's climate and glacially enriched soils ideal for forage crops. Land O'Lakes, though technically headquartered in Minnesota, was cofounded by Wisconsin dairy cooperatives. Kraft Foods (now Kraft Heinz), while incorporated elsewhere, built much of its national cheese business on Wisconsin production. The Wisconsin Milk Marketing Board's promotion of "real Wisconsin cheese" has been one of the most successful regional food branding campaigns in American history.

Manufacturing is the other foundation of Wisconsin's economy. A.O. Smith (water heaters and electric motors), Johnson Controls, Harley-Davidson, Snap-on Tools, Briggs & Stratton, Oshkosh Corporation (specialty trucks), and Kimberly-Clark are among the important Wisconsin-based manufacturers. Milwaukee was a major industrial city for much of the twentieth century, with heavy equipment, machine tools, and brewing driving its economy. Pabst Brewing, Miller Brewing (now MillerCoors), and Schlitz made Milwaukee one of the brewing capitals of the world in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries — "the beer capital of America" was no exaggeration.

The University of Wisconsin-Madison is a world-class research university with particular strengths in biology, chemistry, engineering, and medicine. The Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation (WARF) is among the most productive university technology transfer organizations in the country, having commercialized discoveries from vitamin D synthesis to CRISPR gene editing applications. Epic Systems, the dominant electronic health records company, is headquartered in Verona and employs roughly 10,000 people — making it one of the most important health IT companies in the world.
