Remote Work in Iowa

Iowa's economy is built on some of the most productive agricultural land on earth. The Iowa corn belt — stretching across the state's rolling moraines left by retreating glaciers — produces enormous yields of corn and soybeans that feed both domestic livestock and export markets around the world. Iowa consistently ranks first or second nationally in corn and hog production, and the food processing industry that grew up around that agricultural output has made Iowa a major hub of the American food supply chain. Companies like Quaker Oats (now owned by PepsiCo), which opened its Cedar Rapids facility in 1901, and Ralston Purina, which processed grain in Iowa for decades, exemplify the industrial-scale food manufacturing that defined the state's economy through much of the twentieth century.

John Deere, though headquartered in nearby Moline, Illinois, has deep Iowa roots and operates major manufacturing and parts distribution facilities throughout the state. Deere's presence — alongside CNH Industrial, AGCO, and a web of smaller agricultural equipment manufacturers — makes Iowa a center of the global farm machinery industry. Pella Corporation (windows and doors), Rockwell Collins (now Collins Aerospace, a Raytheon subsidiary), and Principal Financial Group are among the state's most important non-agricultural employers.

Des Moines emerged as a major insurance and financial services hub in the late nineteenth century, attracted by the city's central location, stable business environment, and proximity to the farm economy that needed crop and property insurance. Principal Financial, Meredith Corporation, EMC Insurance, and Wellmark Blue Cross Blue Shield are among the large financial employers that have made Des Moines a city whose corporate economy far outpunches its modest size.

The University of Iowa in Iowa City and Iowa State University in Ames are research-intensive public universities that generate significant intellectual property and produce engineers, scientists, and business graduates who power Iowa's knowledge economy.

Remote work has allowed Iowa to compete for professional talent in a way that was previously difficult. The state's extremely low cost of living — housing in particular — is a major draw for remote workers from coastal cities. Des Moines has been consistently ranked as one of the most underrated cities for young professionals, with a vibrant downtown, low traffic, and strong local culture. For technology, insurance, agricultural technology (agtech), and financial services professionals, Iowa offers exceptional value and quality of life for remote workers willing to embrace Midwestern living.
