U.S. Steel, still headquartered in Pittsburgh, operates at a fraction of its former scale, but the city has been one of the most successful post-industrial reinventions in the country — Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Pittsburgh have made Pittsburgh a global hub of robotics, artificial intelligence, and biomedical research.
The pharma and healthcare sectors are powerful in Pennsylvania. Johnson & Johnson has significant Pennsylvania operations; Merck is headquartered in Kenilworth, New Jersey, but has major research in Pennsylvania; AstraZeneca's North American headquarters is in Wilmington, Delaware, with deep ties to the Philadelphia market. Independence Blue Cross, Jefferson Health, and the University of Pennsylvania Health System are among the largest employers in the Philadelphia area.
Pennsylvania's technology sector has grown significantly. Comcast, headquartered in Philadelphia, is the largest cable and broadband provider in the country and a major content company through NBCUniversal.
