Remote Work in South Carolina

South Carolina's economic history is a story of remarkable transformation, from one of the most plantation-dependent colonial economies in the Americas to a modern state that has attracted more foreign direct investment per capita than almost anywhere in the country. The rice and indigo plantations of the Lowcountry, worked by enslaved African people — many brought directly from rice-growing regions of West Africa — made colonial South Carolina extraordinarily wealthy and shaped a plantation aristocracy whose cultural influence lingered long after the Civil War ended slavery.

Cotton replaced rice and indigo after Eli Whitney's gin made large-scale production economical, and the Upcountry piedmont became a major cotton-growing region through the nineteenth century. The cotton boom led to textile mills — South Carolina had more textile mills than any other Southern state by 1900 — and mill towns like Greenville, Spartanburg, and Rock Hill developed around the industry. The decline of American textile manufacturing in the late twentieth century hit South Carolina hard, but the state's aggressive industrial recruitment strategy turned adversity into opportunity.

BMW chose Spartanburg, South Carolina, as the location for its first North American manufacturing plant in 1992, beginning a wave of foreign automotive investment that transformed the Upstate region. Mercedes-Benz Vans, Volvo (with a plant near Berkeley County), and their respective supplier networks followed, along with Boeing, which built its second 787 Dreamliner final assembly plant in North Charleston in 2009 — the company's first aircraft manufacturing operation outside of the Pacific Northwest. General Electric operates large manufacturing facilities in the state.

The Mercedes-Benz Vans plant, Boeing's Charleston facility, and BMW's Spartanburg campus are now among the largest industrial employers in the state, and the supply chain networks around them have created thousands of additional jobs in precision manufacturing, logistics, and engineering services.

Charleston has emerged as a significant technology and financial services hub, attractwith a growing presence of companies like Blackbaud, Benefitfocus, and Automated Trading Desk. The city's historic beauty, warm climate, and water access make it highly attractive to professionals seeking an alternative to expensive coastal metros.

Remote work has been a significant driver of South Carolina's recent growth. The state has attracted remote workers from New York, New Jersey, and the Mid-Atlantic with its combination of no estate tax, warm climate, beautiful coastline, and increasingly good infrastructure. The Greenville-Spartanburg metro in particular has emerged as a remote work destination for professionals in technology, engineering, and finance.
