Job Description

Salary/Position Classification:

Purpose of Position:

Serve participants in Devils Lake, Ft. Totten, Belcourt and the surrounding area. The office is located in Devils Lake on Lake Region State College’s campus. Advise and instruct participants who are entering college for the first time, returning to college, or transferring colleges using the following methods: helping them with federal financial aid forms and scholarship searches, helping participants complete college admissions forms, taking participants on college tours, conducting career exploration using standardized assessments, and providing advising related to transition issues. Increase participant financial literacy by offering workshops and one-to-one. Offer workshops on topics including goal setting, time management, and study skills. Regular travel to Grand Forks is required. This is a 10-month position, which runs from August 15th to June 15th.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Work with and inform target area administrators and school/agency personnel of Educational Opportunity Center and Upward Bound services in order to identify and select a specified caseload of qualified participants. Complete Needs Assessments, Educational Plans of Action, and participant contact forms, and assist in the tracking of participants’ enrollment in postsecondary education.
  • Provide career exploration activities, educational advising and personal advising to clients to facilitate appropriate educational, career, and postsecondary choices.
  • Provide services and referrals for participants so that they are prepared to enter and/or complete the postsecondary institution of their choice
  • Select, train, supervise and evaluate Educational Opportunity Center functions in conjunction with the Assistant Directors. Participate in opportunities for staff growth, development and evaluation.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date participant and program records. Complete and submit program paperwork in a timely manner.

Required Competencies:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with others as part of a team and independently to accomplish goals and objectives.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint and Word
  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, Counseling, Social Work, or related field. December 2024 graduates will be considered.
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Occasional overnight travel is required.
  • Successful completion of a criminal history background check.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge and experience in postsecondary preparation (academic advising, financial aid, enrollment, etc.)
  • Experience working with a diverse population, including low-income and potential first-generation college students
